Here five of Rooney's best goals. Everton 2 Arsenal 1 - 19/10/02
Rooney announced his arrival to the footballing world with a stunning finish to bag his first Barclays Premier League goal aged just 16 years and 360 days old. With the match deep into injury time, the youngster brought down a high ball from Thomas Gravesen before turning and firing a curling shot that beat David Seaman in the Arsenal goal. The strike ended Arsenal's unbeaten 30-match run and propelled Rooney to stardom. Arsene Wenger was left stunned by Rooney's goal. "He's only supposed to be 16," the Arsenal manager joked.
Manchester United 6 Fenerbahce 2 - 28/9/04
After completing a £30million move to Manchester United, Rooney, now aged 18, made his United debut in front of a packed house at Old Trafford in the club's Champions League group match against Turkish side Fenerbahce. He did not disappoint and helped himself to a hat-trick as United hammered their Turkish counterparts 6-2. The pick of Rooney's goals was his final one, a 20-yard free-kick which he bent over the wall into the top left-hand corner.
Manchester United 3 Middlesbrough 0 - 29/01/05
Rooney produced two wonder goals to ensure United's passage into the fifth round of the FA Cup in their 3-0 rout of Middlesbrough. Rooney, now with 16 England caps under his belt, scored United's second with a long-range lob over Mark Schwarzer, who had rushed out of his goal in an attempt to clear a through ball. With eight minutes left, Rooney sealed the win with a memorable strike - a first time right-foot volley which he rifled into the top right-hand corner from 20 yards.
Manchester United 2 Portsmouth 1 - 26/02/05
Rooney mesmerised both the Old Trafford crowd and David James in this league fixture when he executed a deft chip that sailed over the Portsmouth goalkeeper from the edge of area. James was barely off his line but looked helpless as he tried to claw away the dipping shot. Ferguson remarked afterwards that the audacity to try such a stunt reminded him of United legend Eric Cantona.
Manchester United 2 Newcastle 1 - 24/04/05
Arguably his best, Rooney let rip with a 25-yard bullet that left Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given with barely a chance to see the ball, never mind get a hand to it. After a failed clearance the ball flew up in the air to land perfectly on the England striker's right boot. His volley swerved past Given into the top right-hand corner and sealed the win for United.
