Kayalpatnam.com>You were part of the Tamil Nadu State Team that won the silver medal at the recent National Games held in Assam.
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>Yes, I was part of the team. This was the first time the Tamil Nadu team had reached such a position (reaching finals) at such level.

Kayalpatnam.com>You must have received appreciations from many quarters.
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>Yes, a lot of people wished me. I am expecting the State Government to give a cash prize (it gives for all the medallists at National level).

Kayalpatnam.com>What position you specialise in?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>I play defence though I sometimes play forward also, more like an all rounder.

Kayalpatnam.com>When did you first start playing for Tamil Nadu State team?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>From 2005 onwards, after completing my college. I have played in Santosh Trophy (which is like Cricket's Ranji Trophy for Football). I am one of the youngest members in the team (I was 21 years old when I played in Santosh Trophy).

Kayalpatnam.com>Have you chosen Football as a career now? Are you in it full-time?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>Yes, I play football full-time. I am a member of Netaji Sports Club in Chennai, which plays in the Super Division (apart from being a member of Tamil Nadu State Team).

Kayalpatnam.com>It must be costing a lot of money (playing the game)?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>We get playing kits. Football as such is not a costly game.

Kayalpatnam.com>Do you receive stipends for playing?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>We get a little money per match. That is all. There are also allowances.

Kayalpatnam.com>What is the usual season for football in Chennai?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>It is usually between July and October. This year - due to World Cup Football, the season got delayed. It started a few weeks ago and would be ending around April.

Kayalpatnam.com>No time for jobs?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>No. We practise every day at Saidpet Grounds in Chennai between 6:30 and 8:30 in the morning. There used to be sports quota for some jobs. That quota has been dropped it seems. Some are saying there could be openings in some companies for sportsmen.

Kayalpatnam.com>Sponsorships would be helpful, wouldn't they be not?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>I guess so. I attended a football function recently - where we were told - with Indian cricket performing poorly - a lot more sponsors would be coming to the game now.

Kayalpatnam.com>Tell us about your educational background.
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>I completed my B.Com from Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy in 2004. In fact, I got into the college through my sports background. The college took care of my entire education. My schooling was in Elkay Higher Secondary School, Kayalpatnam.

Kayalpatnam.com>How did you progress to become a state player?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>While I was in Jamal Mohamed College, I represented the Bharatidasan University for four years. People normally travel to Chennai if they want to progress to next level in the football ladder. So I came to Chennai, got into the state team and Netaji Sports Club. Netaji Sports Club is a prominent club. Many state players have been members of this club.

Kayalpatnam.com>When did you first start playing football?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>I started playing football when I was in my 8th standard (with the boots on!). I started just like that, kicking here and there (as most of us do). In Kayalpatnam, since football is the number one game, one starts playing the game naturally. My earliest coach was Marhoom Janab Altaf (of Magdoom Street). He took a lot of interest in my game. I was captain of the Elkay School football team. We went up to inter-division finals.
I played a lot at the USC grounds.

Kayalpatnam.com>What was the reaction of your family, school etc once you got serious about the game (spending time, choosing it as a career)?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>They were generally encouraging. My school encouraged me a lot (they would give us time for practice). My parents were initially hesitating, but once I started receiving medals, they understood.

Kayalpatnam.com>What next?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>Once the current season gets over, I am looking for offers from bigger clubs. My ambition of course is to play for the Indian National Team.

Kayalpatnam.com>Tell us about your family.
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>We are a middle class family (New Bazaar Street). I am the eldest of the three. I have a brother and a sister. My father - Mr.K.A. Nisthar - works in Kumbakonam.

Kayalpatnam.com>Any special people to thank?
Mr.N.Kali Alaudeen>I would like to thank Mr.Thambiraj, who is with the Southern Railways and who was my coach in the College. He encouraged me a lot. Thanks also due to Mr.Amjad, who is an officer with the State Bank and our coach at Netaji Sports Club. I would also like to thank United Sports Club (USC) for providing a good ground for me to practise!

Kayalpatnam.com>We wish you all the best for your future.
